“You’re probably wondering how these situations come up… waiting to hear the simple answer of ‘yes’ or ‘no’. For me, it will either pay off my efforts or just become another notch in failed attempts.”
Amaar looks over Jessie’s body as she laid there confused, yet embarrassed. A thousand thoughts ran through her mind as Amaar stared at her waiting for the next words to escape her mouth, breaking the silence in either relief or sobering realization.
Amaar climbed from his position of hovering over Jessie and sat on the edge of the bed with his back towards her. He quietly reached into his backpack that was placed on the foot of the bed earlier and pulled out his crumpled pack of cigarettes and silently lit on up.

Nothing says second wind like taking what you have and giving all of your soul for something you believe you can accomplish. Amaar was young, but experienced; Naïve but, determined to understand. Fresh out of college and ready for a new start, Amaar never planned for events such as these to come up where he would find himself questioning his next steps into what would be his life and he wanted to ensure he had a hand in for molding his future.
It was a Tuesday; the day Amaar would choose his favorite spot 3 blocks from his apartment to sit and listen to his MP3 of soft jazz and bebop. He would sit in the bench next to the park and just gazed at the scenery as people passed by as if it was a sense of calming nature to him. When he was in school, he would travel there around his stressful days from studying and listening to over whelming instructors. Tuesday meant to him as a Friday to others; it reminded him of his mother—she would have only Tuesday’s off and would dedicate the time to her son. As a business woman, she rarely found time for Amaar, let alone her husband, who has sadly divorced her when Amaar was 8. He cherished the time he has spent with her before he had left for college.
Amaar leaned his head back and gazed at the sky to observe the commercial airplanes moving slowly over the Seattle sky. After an hour of gazing towards the heavens, he stood up and began his trek home. As he walked into his apartment, he realized he had left his cell phone on the desk where his laptop sat—looks like he had missed a couple of calls from someone. He then opened to find out who had called him…it was Jeffery; Amaar’s colleague from one of his classes. Pulling the headphones from his ears had begun to call Jeffery back.
“Hey! Amaar!”
Jeffrey yelled into the phone as the background noise overwhelmed his voice.
“Jeffery?...” Amaar replied with a sense of confusion of where the line was located.
“Hey man, I am at this bitchin’ party! I want you to come down and pick me up; maybe you could meet someone here.”
Amaar scoffed away from the phone, the usual gesture he did when Jeffery or anyone else tried to set him up in a potentially failing relationship.
“Yeah- just text me the address and I will be there as soon as I can.”
“Sure, just give me a mo’ and I will send it to you.”
“All right then…”
Amaar hung up the phone; he went into the kitchen to grab some pumpernickel bread from his cupboard and ate it into before the text arrived—better to have something in your stomach for now…you never know how long you’re going to be out. As he turned off his lights, grabbed his laptop and keys, Amaar was out the door.
As he looked at his Volkswagen bug, he began to fumble to select the correct key to open the door—a guy with a bike, one apartment and a car and yet, so many keys. That was Amaar, believing keys were a keepsake, since you never know when you may need them. He inputted the address from his cell phone into the GPS and he was on his way.
[36 minutes later]
Amaar had arrived to the location to discover that the front lawn was crowded with people and cars parked without any form of organization. He shook his head as he was looking for a location to park his car, luckily there was a spot next to the fence. As he exited the car he looked out the number of cars as well as the people causing a ruckus …
